At an ExxonMobil refining facility, like our site in the Port of Rotterdam, you would expect to find people with job titles like ‘process operator’ and ‘instrument technician’. And at the core of our operations, you would be right. However, from the on-site catering staff and security guards, to the local bakery and florists, ExxonMobil’s Rotterdam facility supports jobs for many people in the area beyond our own team.

ExxonMobil has around 1,000 direct employees in Rotterdam, but we also spend an average of €1.2 billion a year on contractors, who carry out many job functions at the site and beyond. This figure increases even further when we are constructing a new unit at the facility, such as the hydrocracker we built in 2016-18.

However, ExxonMobil’s connection to the area is not ‘just business’. We’ve been operating in Rotterdam for more than a century and we’ve helped build and expand the community around us. As well as employment, we also support many local initiatives – such as wildlife conservation.

Find out what local contractors in Rotterdam have to say about ExxonMobil, how we have helped their businesses thrive, and how we help residents care for and enjoy the local environment:
